Chapter 75

Day 196 (Part 2) – The Worth of an Eye

I recently spoke with a guard who approached me and shared some concerning information. I was uncertain about how to handle it, as it wasn't a betrayal per se, but it was still a matter of concern that required some careful thought before deciding.

Having a reputation for being a generous tipper came in handy, as people who wanted to earn points and had valuable information knew how to approach me. However, the guard who shared the information with me didn't want crystals or any other form of compensation, but asked for a favor that they could call in, no questions asked. Although I dislike being in debt, the information was so valuable that I considered the favor to be worth the cost.

“Hello, Bob.”

“Michael, welcome, welcome.” I laid out 80 50-point crystals.

“That should settle us up.”

“Thank you. You're a model customer. Now, regarding the expedition, I've arranged for four people to join us, with a fee of 120,000 points each for a skill, totaling 480,000 points. Spreading out the payments made things easier. I also have a waiting list of two more people if you can find two more skill points. This payment should also cover the protection fee for the trading trip,” Bob said, pushing the crystals back to me.

“If anyone's interested, I'm offering a level three skill for 250,000 points. They can earn it on the same trip, but I doubt anyone can afford it. It's a chance for people to gain unique and powerful skills,” he added.

“Unfortunately, that price is quite high. Is it possible to lower it?” I asked.

“For the risk involved and the power of the skills, that price is already incredibly cheap. I could charge double,” Bob replied.

“My mistake. Departure tomorrow morning?”

“Yes, first thing. Do you have their payment ready?”

“I'll have it ready by tomorrow morning, just finalizing some details,” Bob said.

“Alright, no payment, no trip. How many will be on the expedition?”

“Four guards and myself. I can leave my assistant in charge here, but I'll need to handle purchases to get good deals,” Bob explained.

“Very well. We'll be traveling from sunup to sundown. I expect you and your men to obey orders while we're in the wilderness without question. Finally, I'll spend one whole day in the city of Neo Brasilia.”

“Good, good. I'm also bringing a guide with us. You might already know him.”

“Estevo?” I guessed.

“Is there going to be a problem?” Bob asked.

“No, just keep a close watch on him. Have a guard accompany him at all times. We don't want information to reach Neo Brasilia too easily.”

“Haha, no worries. You'll protect us on the way back, right?”

“Of course. See if you can find one or two people with 250,000 points to spend on level three skills.”

“Maybe we could arrange a contract through the Union. Someone might be interested, and I'm actually headed there now to finalize things with Laura.”

“Sounds good. Let's go.” Bob and I walked across the plaza to the Union building.
